Support for the Indebted

As part of the ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and provide opportunities for those in need, the Egyptian Foundation for Development and Education works on supporting individuals who have fallen into debt due to difficult circumstances. This initiative aims to help those suffering from accumulated debts and who find themselves in prison because they cannot pay these debts, leading to the breakdown of their families. The project seeks to ease the burden on these individuals, support their families, and assist them in reintegrating into society with dignity.

Who is the Indebted?

An indebted person is one who has accumulated debts due to difficult circumstances or urgent needs to face life's crises, such as securing basic needs, educating their children, or providing medical treatment. Over time, these debts can lead to legal consequences, where these individuals are imprisoned due to their inability to repay.

Indebted Criteria at the Egyptian Foundation

An indebted person is one who has accumulated debts due to essential life needs, such as supporting their family, educating their children, or facing health crises. The foundation does not include cases where the debts arise from illegal activities (such as usury loans, gambling, or alcohol). The foundation focuses on supporting individuals suffering legal consequences due to debts caused by their difficult circumstances.

Project Mission and Vision

Mission: The foundation aims to relieve the indebted, reunite their families, and provide them with a decent life after their release from prison, preventing their return to prison.
Vision: The foundation aims to pay off the debts of as many indebted individuals as possible, whether they are in prison or have final rulings against them. It also strives to raise awareness of the dangers of debt and its negative impact on families and society, urging individuals not to sign blank promissory notes.

Project Strategy

Relieving the Indebted: Supporting the indebted to free them from prison, whether they are currently imprisoned or have final judgments against them.
Rehabilitating the Indebted: Helping those who have been freed from prison to start small projects such as grocery stores, poultry businesses, or sewing projects to enable them to reintegrate into society as productive and effective individuals.

Project Goals

Raising awareness that the indebted can benefit from zakat, as Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60: “Zakat is for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, and for those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for freeing captives, and for the indebted...”
Eradicating poverty by providing small projects for the indebted or supporting their existing projects to expand their capital, helping them achieve financial stability and avoid returning to debt.
Protecting families from disintegration due to the imprisonment of the family head due to debt, which can sometimes lead to the imprisonment of the entire family, resulting in the phenomenon of street children and child labor.
Changing society's perception of the indebted, as they should be seen as victims of difficult circumstances, not criminals. They did not turn to debt due to moral corruption, but because of their dire situation.

Project Achievements

By the grace of Allah, the foundation has been able to relieve more than 15,000 indebted individuals since the project's inception in May 2022, whether they were in prison or had final judgments against them. This initiative has contributed to raising awareness among individuals by collaborating with local charities in Egyptian villages and rural areas about the harms of debt and its effects on the family and society. It has also encouraged individuals to avoid signing blank promissory notes.
